Jesse Lingard has always found a way to eventually silence his critics, and his performances for England at the World Cup were a key testament to that. The Manchester United midfielder excelled in the roaming No.8 role alongside Dele Alli, scoring a stunner against Panama and impressing throughout the tournament.
Gareth Southgate is clearly a big fan of Lingard’s as well, but it feels as if the 25-year-old is somewhere near the best of his abilities at this point – while he’s a solid player, he’s never going to move into the bracket of world-class.
22-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek, on the other hand, appears to only be at the very start of his journey despite showing monstrous form in patches while on loan at Crystal Palace last term.

He’s now back at parent club Chelsea and despite managing only 33 minutes in the Premier League so far under Sarri, Southgate clearly values the powerful midfielder’s potential enough to reserve a space for him in the latest England squad.
So, Three Lions fans, who would you start against Spain in the Nations League on Saturday? Should Southgate stick with one of his trusted deputies in Lingard or opt for Chelsea’s younger model? Let us know by voting below…
